2/18 SABA – Northern California Gala

If anyone plans on being in San Francisco the weekend of February 18th, this might be worthwhile:

South Asian Bar Association of Northern California 18th Annual Gala
Friday, Febrary 18, 2011, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The Green Room, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA.

The SABA NC Gala is the premier event for South Asian attorneys in Northern California and regularly draws a diverse audience of judges, attorneys, law students, academics, politicians, South Asian community leaders and prominent members of the state, local and other minority bars. Over 250 people attended the 2010 Gala and due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, this year’s Gala will again take on a cocktail-party format rather than a sit-down dinner, with light South Asian fare, a brief program and a dessert reception. The Gala benefits the SABA-NC Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which provides public interest fellowships to law students committed to serving the South Asian community.

Subject: Temp Attorney Position At Sony
Judge Johnson—
Happy New Year!
We at Sony would be honored if you could share with your personal network a temporary opening we have.  We are looking for an entry level attorney to work temporarily under the supervision of a more senior attorney here  (Sonja, copied) in the area of IT outsourcing contracts.  There is some possibility of the position extending indefinitely, but realistically we think two to three months of work is what we need.   This would be a great chance for an entry level attorney to get some corporate experience while looking for something more permanent.
We are also looking at experienced contract managers/paralegals for the same role.
Inquiries should be directed to Katie Zunich, copied.
Best,
Chris

Paul Singh Grewal Appointed as Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California

Article also found at: http://www.napaba.org/napaba/showpage.asp?code=PR-paulsinghgrewal

WASHINGTON – The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) congratulates Paul Singh Grewal on his appointment to the position of magistrate judge in the San Jose division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He is the first South Asian judge to serve on the bench in the Northern District of California.

“Judge Grewal is a welcome addition to the federal bench. His significant experience in intellectual property matters as well as his wide-ranging practice before the federal courts will make him a valuable addition to the Northern District of California. NAPABA looks forward to Judge Grewal’s term as Magistrate Judge and is proud to call him one of our own,” praised Paul O. Hirose, president of NAPABA.

Before joining the bench, Magistrate Judge Grewal was a partner at Howrey LLP, where his practice focused on technology litigation. He previously clerked for Judge Samuel H. Bell of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and also for Judge Arthur J. Gajarsa of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Magistrate Judge Grewal earned his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and attended the University of Chicago Law School.

NAPABA applauds Magistrate Judge Grewal’s long-standing commitment to the Asian Pacific American community. In November 2010, NAPABA recognized Magistrate Judge Grewal as one of the 2010 recipients of NAPABA’s Best Lawyers Under 40 award. He previously served as president of the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA), and is a former president of the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California (SABA-NC), which was NAPABA’s 2010 Affiliate of the Year.

NAPABA is proud to have supported Magistrate Judge Grewal and commends the Northern District of California for his appointment.
